This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are very talented and curious explorers of different ages and abilities. This project will benefit all my students, but it will benefit the self-contained special needs classes that include students with disabilities the most. They love to let their wandering hearts explore every corner of the classroom. I want the classroom to be a place of comfort where they can learn and decompress from the pressures around them. I have found certain items in my classroom can provide immense comfort to a student who might be having a hard day. These distractions sometimes pull them out of their temporarily uncomfortable state and allow them to thrive in circumstances you wouldn't believe. I am asking for Headphones, Glowing Drum Sticks, Gel Pads, and chargers.
"Compassion is the wish to see others free from suffering."
Over 90% of children with autism demonstrate atypical sensory behaviors. In the classroom, we compete with conflicting sensory needs and sensitivities at the same time that we learn inclusion and tolerance, social and emotional self-control, and individualized academic instruction. I have stopped entire meltdowns with one single item that might seem unimportant to the person without visible disabilities but has become absolutely priceless to little hearts in my classroom. In special education, we understand that students do not give us a hard time, they sometimes might be having a hard time and it is our privilege to comfort and support them. Sensory affects us all and we believe empathy and compassion run strong in our community. We are working on a school project where 5th grade students will be a "teacher-for-a-day" and they will learn how to see the world through the eyes of a special needs teacher and student. They will write an essay about what they learned about compassion and contribution to society.
