My students need basic school supplies and most can't afford on fixed incomes, limited resources, and many are supporting themselves by working after school jobs in order to obtain basic needs
GCSC Alternative Education currently serves at-risk students in grades 6-12 residing within a socio-economically challenged, rural district as well as adult high school diploma seekers. At-risk students include those with personal or family difficulties, students with special learning needs, students with prior academic failure as well as students with behavioral issues that make it difficult for them to succeed in a traditional 7 period classroom setting day. We house several programs throughout the academic year including alternative education, credit recovery, night school, and an extended credit recovery program during the summer. These programs not only aid students in obtaining a high school diploma, but they also address the basic literacy skills that employers today are seeking: reading, writing, math, English language competency, and problem-solving. On the average, these programs serve 75-100 students per year. Although labeled as "alternative school," these are not trouble students; simply those that need extra help to fulfill educational goals.
My Project
My at-risk students struggle financially to purchase the most basic school supplies. Every year, I take money out of my own pocket and buy supplies so my students will have the same resources as their more financially able peers.
These same students come from broken-homes, have parents who may be in trouble with the law, and/or live under the poverty threshold.
They view school as a safe place, yet lack supplies that are essential for success.
The students will utilize the supplies throughout the academic year and by not having to take hard-earned money out of their own pockets or go without, will be able to purchase items necessary for their everyday lives.
