This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My small first grade class has spent the past five weeks getting set up for "distance learning" due to school closures. Their supportive families have found ways to connect them to digital platforms where students can watch daily videos, participate in video classes and practice classroom skills.

First graders are joyful, curious learners who love to read silly stories together.

First grade is the biggest year for reading instruction and when our school closed on March 13th, my students were just beginning to put everything they had learned about letters and words and stories together to become independent readers.

My school is in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. Our students come from diverse language and cultural backgrounds where the majority speak Spanish at home. Many families are experiencing transitions or challenging socio-economic circumstances.

My Project

Since school closures, due to COVID-19, we have been focused on getting students connected to digital platforms where they can engage in school work and connect with their classmates. With the help of donated technology, increased Wi-Fi connectivity and lots of family support, students have begun reading, writing, and creating online with increasing independence.

However, families have reported to me that what their children miss most of all is reading real books!

Before school closed, we had spent a lot of time exploring the writing and pictures of Mo Willems, author of the beloved Pigeon, Elephant and Piggie, and Knuffle Bunny books. With your support I will be able to send each child in my class four high quality Mo Willems books and an activity book that they can engage with at home. While nothing can replicate the joy of reading with a partner in the classroom, I hope that we can also find new ways to share reading these books with each other, through photos and video conferencing.
