My second graders embody the Aloha spirit. They are loving, compassionate, full of gratitude, and care deeply for our Earth. They like to move, sing, build, and stretch out on the floor with a good book.
My students learn best when they are able to physically connect to our studies through hands-on experiences.
We live in a diverse rural community on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our community is tight-knit, but it is isolated. As a result, we have limited resources. My students are too young to feel the limitations yet, and I'd like to keep it that way. I work hard to ensure that every child in my room has just what he/she needs to feel secure and be successful in school.
My Project
Childhood should be full of laughter and giggles. Sometimes life is hard though, and kids need a bit of help finding a smile in their day. Silly books, like those by Shel Silverstein and the Just Joking series by National Geographic, are engaging to read. They brings students together to share in laughter. When kids read these books, they share the jokes with others, spreading giggles and joy through their day.
Life is intense, even for second graders, and a good laugh always makes it easier.
The books I am requesting are full of age-appropriate jokes, riddles, and silly poems. A few of the books will be placed in our calm-down corner to provide a distraction and smile for students who are having a really rough day. The other books will be made available in our classroom library for students to read, share, and enjoy daily. Everybody needs a good laugh, and these books will provide my students with smiles they can share.
