Silk Screen and Block Printing in Third Grade

My students need silk screening and block printing supplies to expand their creative writing into art expression.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Barnett's classroom raised $464

My Students

My students are always busy writing, creating, and sharing ideas. Being able to provide them a new way to express themselves would be exciting to them as well as educational.

My students live in the heart of a large city and attend a low poverty school that is almost 100 years old.

We have preschool school through 5th grade here. My 31 students come to school on public transportation, school buses, by walking, or riding a bike. Every student is provided a free breakfast to start their day with a full tummy and a free lunch to make sure they are all getting their proper nutrition. Not only are they learning to read and write, but I also believe in providing them the opportunities where they can express their creative side.

My Project

Having the opportunity to create silkscreen and block printing art work takes their illustration skills to a new level. First, providing the students with pre-stretched fabric frames and graduating to frames where they stretch the fabric over is a good practice in understanding screen-printing or drawing on foam to produce a block print. Now the students are ready to print! Putting a couple of spoonfuls of ink on one side of the image and pulling the ink across the screen with the squeegee, what an awesome feeling! As they graduate to adding 2nd and 3rd colors...more awesomeness! My students love to illustrate their work, not only in ELA, but also science and social studies. Printmaking requires the students to think out of the box, plan, and work in sequence of steps over days. This provides them time to discuss with others things that have worked or haven't worked as they produced their art. This communication helps the students to be observant, listen to others, and try new things.

Providing my students the opportunity to use printmaking skills will make a difference in how they make art and think about illustrating.

It lets them have the background to discuss illustrations in mentor books, and really helps them learn patience, understanding of procedures, and working with others. Printmaking is not only an art form, but will provide my students with life skills.
