Silencio Por Favor: Students are Reading Their Favorite Books

Help me give my students independent reading books written in English and Spanish to learn about themselves and the world one page at a time.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom population mostly consists of Hispanic and African-American students who participate in the free lunch program. Many students are English Language Learners and many receive special education services.

My students are inquisitive, creative and optimistic.

They show up ready to learn and ask meaningful questions. They also enjoy discussing what they have read and writing journal entries.

Attending school is a first step toward success. Although my students may face obstacles, it does not deter them from following their dreams. They aspire to become pediatric registered nurses, entrepreneurs, journalists, veterinarians and more!

My Project

Filling our bookshelf with independent reading books written in English and Spanish will give students options in selecting texts that pique their interests. It is important for students to become habitual readers to not only increase their knowledge and vocabulary but also to learn about self-awareness, optimism and leadership.

Reading high interest texts provides a time for students to relax and learn about the world through the eyes of insightful writers.

According to a student, holding and reading a brand new book "helps students to temporarily immerse themselves in the story and shape their ideas and beliefs." This connection between student and writer will hopefully inspire students to continue reading throughout their adult lives.
