My Students
I teach students with a variety of sensory and academic needs in an urban elementary school. My students come to my classroom for support in academics, sensory and behavioral concerns. They often work independently, in small groups or individually with an adult to accomplish their academic task.
My students are energetic, curious and knowledge seeking.
Our school is a large public school where 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch due to the economic needs of our families. As a school we have a 74% passing rate for state appointed standardized tests. My students have needs beyond basic academics. They seek support regulating sensory input, organization, emotional stability and social skills. My students work to make steps to success every day.
My Project
Regulating sensory input can be a struggle for many students. Seeking out ways to block out environmental distractions such as the buzzing of fluorescent lights, the noise in the cafeteria, sounds during a fire drill, and talking of others in the classroom, while still listening to instructions, are some of these struggles. There are several ways that my students work to keep themselves focused however, sometimes we need headphones to block out some of the external noise. These silencing headphones allow my students the independence to filter the extra sounds and have a consistent input volume so they can focus on learning and social interactions without feelings of anxiety.
