My Students

Students in the "highest poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.

My students have experienced adversity.

In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.

My Project

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...... NOISE CANCELING HEADPHONES!

Worth more than gold and more helpful to every classroom than Superman are the untapped resource that every classroom could benefit from .... a class set of noise cancelling headphones!

This project is genius in it's simplicity. What does my classroom need more than ANYTHING to help them think? Silence. What can help these amazing kiddos that each face their own enormous challenges? Not their friends distracting them from thinking - they need silence. Time to themselves when they can think without distraction or disruption. Time to consider carefully the choices of multiple choice. Without interruptions during independent work time students will be more productive.

We need to remember that the Gradual Release Method of teaching is researched to be effective. We know that when students work independently to show what they know it can be a struggle. Let's give this class a set of 25 headphones so they can each have the silent headspace to perform at their highest ability.
