This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are highly motivated, interesting, and engaged. They love to pull apart the details of our reading and, through discussion, cobble those details back together in meaningful ways. They're a pleasure to work with.
They're seventh graders, a year full of contradictions and discoveries.
Part of my job is to help them learn to manage their thinking, which requires us as a group to talk about how to tease apart what's important from what's not. Another part of my job is to provide students with easy to manage tools that facilitate thinking.
My Project
What would really be helpful is a laser printer that lives in our classroom. Reading and writing tools can be printed for students on demand, and will increase engagement with tools because they can be handheld.
A laminator can seal up loose papers that are ordinarily damaged after a full day's work, keeping our attractively printed tools looking new.
Kids love to have choice, and what better way to help kids become more independent readers and writers than to give them control over reading and writing tools they use at their desks? From checklists to models of exemplary writing, it would be wonderful to be able to print neatly and preserve the work.
