My Students

Our students are exceptional! We are located in a small, rural town surrounded by tobacco, cotton, and sweet potato fields. Our school consists of 500, preK-5th grade students, 30 teachers, and two administrators.

Over 78% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Our students are enthusiastic, creative, and goal oriented. We have a large Hispanic population. Over 60% could be the first in their families to go to college. Our school motto is, Making Tomorrow Better Today!

They are enthusiastic, creative, and goal-oriented, but need the tools necessary to be successful.

My Project

Due to COVID restrictions again this year I want to help my students communicate better with masks. Teaching and learning with a mask makes it difficult to hear and understand each other. This leads to frustration.

Learning sign language (ASL) will help with students' social/emotional needs.

As the STEM teacher, I see all students and am able to teach key words and phrases to all students. I have made communications my professional goal this year. These materials will allow the students, teachers, and myself learn a useful language to improve communications.
