My Students
I became a teacher to impact lives. Every day I have an awesome opportunity to positively influence our future generation.
I recently read a static that says, "in low-income neighborhoods there is one book per every 300 children." Being a teacher in a low-income school, I can attest to the fact that many low-income households can be tumultuous environments.
The kids face such challenges as there is little support at home to facilitate their learning.
My Project
We are requesting hands-on sight word manipulatives. The Build–A-Word tiles will help students explore spelling patterns, making it easier to identify word families. Exposure to these hands-on manipulative's strengthens their decoding skills which leads to reading success!
The Sight Word Instant Center is an activity set that will make my students more independent as learners. In addition to building reading skills, their social skills will be enhanced as they need to work collaboratively to spell the words on the pictures cards. This center comes with enough materials for up to 4 children to work at once, and it includes a double-sided instruction chart that gives everyone easy access to the activities…and simple picture instructions, so even my non readers can participate and complete activities on their own. For the students who might struggle a bit more, I am requesting upper and lower case plastic letters. With these manipulative's, students can easily learn letter recognition by observing the differences in letter formation.
Research shows "The child who can recognize on sight 8 of the 10 words in the sentence before him can read that sentence and, generally, decode the remaining words by means of context, phonics, or illustrations.
Most importantly, he can understand its meaning!" These materials will get my students started on the path to reading success. For my babies, reading is the way out of poverty, reading is the first step to a successful life.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
