My Students

My kindergarten students are English language learners whose school is located near low-cost housing projects in a high poverty area in California. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most students come from families whose parents cannot support them with literacy or homework, as they cannot speak sufficient English, or are sometimes illiterate. Additionally, some of them spend most of their day at school (in an afterschool program) as their parents are not able to care for them at home.

The majority of my students begin the year with little or no knowledge of age-appropriate skills, such as letter and number recognition.

Some have not attended preschool. Notwithstanding the work we do in our classroom to meet the needs of all students, by the end of the year, some are far below grade level.

My Project

Sight words are a powerful tool in early literacy. As kindergarten students begin to read, their books are filled with pictures and sight words in the form of patterns (i.e. I like to run). More than half of the words in any given text are sight words.

If children don't learn sight words consistently and systematically, they cannot read higher level texts with fluency and comprehension.

To be successful in first grade, kindergarten students must learn at least 100 sight words. Our sight word lists range from level A to D, each list containing 25 sight words that correspond to guided reading levels.

Throughout the school year, we practice sight words on flash cards and, most importantly, in the context of books my students and I read together (both as a whole class, and in small groups at their instructional reading level). Parents are also asked to practice sight words daily with their child. However, this is a challenge for most working parents. And it is particularly difficult for parents who don't speak English.

Donations to this project will ensure that my students will practice and learn these words daily through developmentally appropriate interactive activities and games. By using the Fishing for Sight Words, playing the Sight-Word Shell game and Sight Word Steps, using the interactive learning cards and the Write and Wipe Sight Word Cards, students will learn sight words in different ways. This will appeal to the different learning modalities in our classroom and facilitate sight word learning.
