My Students
My second grade students come to class each day with a desire to learn. Providing them with high-quality texts and stories that keep them interested and focused while still learning, is difficult. I have the privilege to teach students from diverse backgrounds.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced price meals.
My students are English Language Learners. My students are eager to learn but lack the foundational skills in the areas of reading and writing. Background vocabulary is one of the areas that is impacting their reading comprehension skills.
My Project
My students need to learn sight words. Sight words are words that do not follow the regular patterns of spelling. Thus, it is with the routine practice that they will internalize all these words needed to read a grade-appropriate text successfully.
Students will practice sight words spelling using a multisensory approach. They will use the magnetic letters to build each word.
Then, during literacy workstations, they will have the chance to shape each letter of the sight words using the dough. Finally, they will stamp each sight word by using the letter stamps and the ink pads.
Having all these sensory experiences in place on a daily basis will allow my students to be successful decoders and readers.
