This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is in a low-income, urban area and students are diverse in many ways, including ethnically and economically. Over 85% of our K-5th grade students who attend our school are identified as Title I and many are second language learners. During the time of distance learning, many of the students have had limited support and access to resources at home and now they are behind academically. The students I support in my Early Intervention Program have been identified as at-risk and are performing far below grade level in reading. They want to learn yet they struggle with confidence, they have learning disabilities, and now due to the pandemic, they are further behind than ever before and challenged with adjusting to returning to school in person, away from their devices.
My Project
My students are just learning to read and learning their sight words is often a challenge for them. I have found that using high-interest books with colorful photos, simple texts, and rebus pictures makes learning the words engaging and memorable. Plus these books are non-fiction from topics that children will love to discover - from farm animals to the five senses.
As students explore each book, they focus on just 5-10 sight words at a time- a get the targeted practice they need to make each word their own.
We will be using these books daily in small groups during our reading intervention time and the students will be allowed to bring these books home to practice and explore with their families. This is just the beginning of building a love for reading.
