My school is located just outside the city limits of St. Louis, MO. Students come from a very diverse background of economics and ethnicity. They are always eager to learn and try new things. Some of them have significant trauma at home and school is a safe, fun place to be.
All students can get a free breakfast, lunch, and lots of love and learning at school.
They sometimes need help with supplies, as their families struggle with providing them. With added support, they are able to learn more.
My Project
Learning sight words is fundamental in learning to and being able to read. Sight words must be known by sight, not by sounding out phonetically. I review sight words with my students everyday. They continue to struggle with remembering the words. They need more exposure to the sight words. The activities that I have requested are focusing on learning these sight words. They will allow my students to have fun while learning these words. My students will be able to practice their sight words during our workshop time which is when I work with a small group on a specific standard while the rest of the class is working on specific activities at their seats or throughout the classroom. The hands-on sight word activities will give my students the extra exposure they need to these words.
With your help, I know my first grade students will struggle less and reach the goal of learning their 100 sight words with the use of these additional activities.
Knowing their sight words will help with my students becoming readers.
