This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm a 5th grade teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. One of those challenges being the fact that they don't have adequate school supplies due to economic hardships they face at home. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% of our students receiving free lunch.
How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed?
My Project
Some students come to school without materials needed on a daily basis, simply because their parents can't afford to supply them with them. By donating to our project my students will be able to have the adequate supplies needed to show their "wit and wisdom" in English class. Having pencils, highlighters, and white-out will help my students having the necessary writing tools to complete in class essays. Sticky notes can help them annotate their thoughts as we read a piece of literature.
I believe when a child enters the classroom and is able to have the supplies he/she needs, they are able to perform assignments without stressing over not having what they need to complete it.
It is very important to me that my students not worry about if they have the materials needed for class. By supplying them with these supplies, they can focus on learning to be great thinkers and writers.
