Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our High School is a grade 9-12 public school dedicated to meeting the needs of recent immigrant students in a large urban setting. We work with speakers of diverse language, cultural and educational backgrounds to ensure all receive access to the learning that will allow them to achieve their own American dreams. As a biology teacher, I struggle to overcome these personal differences, as well as the abstract nature of my discipline, by using hands-on lessons that involve the learner in the active DOING of science. In trying to provide one-on-one support, a challenge we face is the need to re-do close-up demonstrations again and again as we move from table to table. We've rewritten instructions at various literacy levels, had students help translate and made our lab introductions as visual as possible. But the best way to explain what you want the kids to try is to show it to them. Anyone who's seen a cooking show will agree! By obtaining a reasonably priced document camera, like the one I've seen demonstrated at our local science museum, we can bring the art of the close up to the whole class at once. The camera can hook into existing digital projectors, and allow us to look simultaneously at the same cell in the microscope, the same fossil in my hand or the same diagram in the classroom anatomy atlas. Your support can literally help kids to see and understand science.
