My students need LEGO's to create mini-movies as an alternative form of asssessment.

My Students

We are a Title I school in rural Arizona with over eight hundred fifty students. Our students range in age from five to thirteen. We are in our second year of a three-year transition plan to becoming a full STEM school. Our students are very excited about STEM.

"I haven't failed.

I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work," Thomas Edison. This quote fits our STEM program because we are teaching our students to persevere as their projects might fail the first time. We use the Engineering Design Process to engage our students in the STEM journey.

My Project

My students are non-verbally gifted and need different ways to show what they have learned. I am working to create a program where they will have their own digital portfolios and create mini LEGO movies.

Their mini movies will show their understanding of concepts that they have learned in their core classrooms.

The students will chose the concepts and standards that they want to feature in their movie, storyboard their movies, create the scenes and props, film their movies, and finally edit these movies before turning them into their teachers.

The students will also have to write up a reflection paper about their movies and what they have learned. All of these pieces will be in their digital portfolios.

I would like for these students to use the LEGO baseplates and bricks to build models for their movies. They will also be able to use the LEGO BOOST robot to help animate their movies.

I want to stay as hands-off of these movies and let the students lead. There is an infomational book to help guide the students through how to make their movies. They will also have a class webcam that they will be able to use to film their movies.
