My team consists of 33 students in a self-contained program. These students come from low-income households. My school is 100% free breakfast and lunch and the school purchases their school supplies. There are limited funds for the classroom. Many of the classrooms supplies come from teachers, outside of what we are given to spend, the teachers on our team purchase the rest.
Chart paper, dry erase boards, markers, post-it notes all help students to "show what they know," and it allows us to create engaging lessons with tangible materials to make abstract concepts more obtainable.
My Project
As a teacher in a self-contained program, I constantly find ways for my students to show what they know. Often kids struggle with the expressive piece of their learning. They need supplies to help them demonstrate what they know.
Using dry erase boards, markers, and erasers they are able to write and draw answers from the lesson without feeling insecure about sharing out loud.
When answering, they write the answer on the board and show the board in the air. I am able to see what the whole class is thinking, all at the same time, allowing each student to have a voice. This way, not one child is the star of the class, they are all stars in their educational experience.
