About My Students

My students are incredibly resilient. They come in each day with a positive attitude and ready to learn. Even though they encounter a variety of challenges, with help they seem to overcome those adversities. As the 8th grade and student council advisor, I also work with students who are learning to develop leadership skills within the school. I work for a public title 1 charter school in Aurora, CO, where students come from many different backgrounds and cultures of life.

We are asking for funding for this project because we want every student to feel included, important and welcomed at our school. Having the paint and buddy bench will help students to take the initiative to be a friend when they see a friend is needed. Students will also learn anti-bullying strategies and empathy skills towards classmates and help create a more welcoming and secure school environment and community.

In Their Own Words

The students want to create a more welcoming and friendly school environment. This bench will be a visual to help students see that not only do some kids have a hard time making friends, but some kids needs to learn how to be a friend. This bench can be a daily and constant lesson in students lives.

This project will be student lead and presented to each grade level by student council representatives. Student council will present the bench to the school & surrounding community; as well as, video tape to show the positive impact the bench has on the playground and our school. The will be showcased at our All School Community Meeting

This project is important because of the impact it will have on our students and school community. This project will help students develop empathy for students who may struggle in reaching out for friends. For students who do struggle in developing coping skills to communicate with others, this is a perfect way to open that door for them.
