Let's keep it positive like a proton! Let's celebrate hard-work, positive attitude, and perseverance by recognizing and rewarding students who embody them.
My students love science!
My students are engaged, enthused, and eager to learn! My 8th graders attend a low-income, Title 1 school.
Our school has more than 70% English learners and many qualify for free/reduced lunch. Despite the socioeconomic challenges that they face, my students are extremely hard-working and love science class. Last year, they placed top three in both 7th and 8th district science fair, and had the opportunity to compete in this year's county STEM fair. Although we have incredible students, our school focuses more on discipline and the 1% of the population that are constantly getting referrals. Because of that, the students who work hard, the shy and quiet ones, and those who go above and beyond to help their teachers and classmates are often overlooked. I wish to change that culture by recognizing and celebrating these students, and I hope their positive attitudes will trickle down to influence the negative ones.
My Project
I am requesting plain white T-shirts to heat press a "Ben Franklin 2015-16 Scientist of the Week" (written in Periodic Table font!) logo to be worn by students who earn my Scientist of the Week award. This will be given out as a positive reward to my young scientists for working hard, keeping a positive attitude, and for helping their classmates. Those who earned it will wear it proudly for being an outstanding student, and will keep it as a memento after graduating middle school.
This year, I am emphasizing positive attitude, preparedness, and hard-work by awarding outstanding students.
By giving recognition to these hardworking students, I hope to see other students work harder to try to earn this reward as well! Instead of punishing students for bad behavior, I hope to motivate every single one of my students to work hard and help others. Positivity is contagious!
