This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from the heart of New Jersey; Trenton, and they all have big beautiful giving hearts. More than half of my students receive free and reduced lunch and they all come from homes where parents work odd jobs, varying shifts and speak other languages. My classroom is their source of consistency & stability.
My students love to learn!
They are curious and inquisitive and enjoy learning and growing in class every day. We are a family that cares for each other and loves each other unconditionally.
My Project
As struggling readers, my students need a lot of reinforcement of basic skills which requires us to talk about reading and writing often in our classroom. We chart our ideas and save them for reference later on.
Our class needs a white board teaching cart so we can chart our ideas.
Currently we have chart paper leaning on a chair, that I also sit in while we create charts as a class. The students are often unable to see, and the setup causes me to have my back towards them often which also creates behavior issues.
My students are eager to learn and grow as readers. They use a reading program on the computer where they compete against each other and they are always excited to move up another level. They want to learn and grow and they want to do a good job in school, often times despite the lack of parental involvement in school or homework.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
