This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

From the very beginning of the school year, my students will find a place in our classroom with the chance to show off their name. They will "graph" their name using block letters on graph paper, first using black pens and rulers to outline. This process will help them re-adjust to the routine of learning at school and prepare them for the upcoming geometry unit, which requires the use of coordinates. Once outlined, students will then color in their names in any color and pattern they would like, and glue the graph paper to a piece of construction paper.

The students' colorful names will be hung on the wall of the classroom, representing both the math and community aspects of the class.

This gives them an opportunity to show off a part of them while starting with an activity that does not just involve mindless calculations and numbers. Many of my students are English Learners, and they represent themselves very well when given the opportunity to communicate in ways other than writing and speaking, such as drawing. Every day that they come into the classroom, they will see their name on the wall and know that they belong. Not only that, they will already be used to drawing points and lines on the coordinate grid when we transform geometric shapes the following week!
