Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are the bravest kids in the world. They come to us from one of the most dangerous, impoverished communities in America, but they are determined to move beyond their challenges and one day go to college. They are hard workers who deserve the very best education and future possible.
We are a public charter high school full of pride and support.
Our student body is 97% people of color and 88% receive free or reduced lunch. While only 4% of the parents of our students have graduated from college, almost 97% of our graduates attend college. Truly, our students are some of the most inspiring young people you could ever meet, and they need your help! These kids are given all kinds of excuses and negative encouragement, but they come back to school every day, full of optimism and faith that if they just succeed in school, they can help themselves and their families have a better life. I asked them to reflect on why they want to attend college and I got answers like, "So I can be somebody," or "So I can take care of my family and they won't ever have to worry about money again." I look at my students and see the American dream personified. Through their hard work and dedication, they are going to break a cycle of poverty they had no hand in creating.
My Project
Imagine you're a high school student who has pretty much been failed by the educational system your whole life. You come to a school that sees budget cuts almost daily. The outside world seems to be screaming at you, "Give up! No one really cares about your education!"
Then, one day, you walk into your math class and there is a shiny, new document camera. You've never seen this before. When you solve a difficult problem, your teacher puts your actual work- your handwriting! your diagram! - up for the entire class to see. When you ask the teacher how she did that, she says, "Wonderful people care about you. They know you deserve the very best. They've donated this camera to us so we can share your brilliance with everyone in the class."
The next week, you do a project in which you design a new park for your community. The teacher is able to share student work with the whole class, every step of the way. You're encouraged. You're famous. You know that you count.
Students should be the center of the classroom, and a document camera will help us put their brilliance on display for all to see.
Being smart and doing great work needs to be celebrated. What better way than to show your peers the actual work you achieved? Students will develop speaking skills, confidence, and critical thinking as they explain their thought processes and share their brains with their peers.
