This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are young musicians. I train them to be professionals. They range in age from 6th grade to 12th grade. We have some very poor families who cannot afford to purchase an instrument for their child to use. Unfortunately, the band program does not have many instruments to loan out either.
Music is not just a subject, but a passion; that's what I try to pass on to my students.
Several of them have a passion much greater than the quality of the tools I can provide for them. They need better equipment to be able to reach their full potential.
My Project
Band is a visual event as much as it is an audio event. If our band can see what we directors see at practice, they will be better equipped to evaluate themselves and fix their own mistakes.
There are several things we could do with a camcorder.
In addition to immediate playback and evaluation, we will also be able to film our concerts so parents who cannot attend can watch them. We also have an end-of-the-year banquet where we show a slideshow of pictures from the year's activities. I would love to be able to incorporate some video as well. I would also like our band members to record "commercials" encouraging younger students to join band.
