Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your first allowance? Were you a saver or a spender as soon as you get it type of person? Is that behavior learned or is it innate?

I teach in an impoverished area of Los Angeles.

My students come from low income households and all of them receive a free lunch. As their teacher, I want them to reach their ultimate potential. As a product of the city I teach in, I know first hand what it means to only have needs at home. Watching television makes children of poverty feel that they are missing something... stuff. The people on TV are always happy and have a great family life. They don't have two working parents constantly stressed about making ends meet.

My Project

I want to teach my second graders financial literacy. I want them to not only learn the value of coins and how to make change but what the value of a dollar is. When I ask my students what they would do with $100, most of them say they would buy an xBox, a Wii, or even one said a house. They don't have a clue about what things cost. Beyond that they want to spend every penny. I want to teach them about saving a portion of their allowance in hopes that someday they will shop frugally and not go into debt. I would like to have a couple of iPads so my students can research the price of items and investigate the costs of living a comfortable life. Additionally they can begin to research college tuition and type out their plans. Various apps are available for free to reinforce their ability to add and subtract money.

I believe that these lessons will inspire them to stay in school and graduate from college to attain the comfortable lifestyle they seek.

In this community, only about 50% of our students graduate from high school and I envision that by giving my students a little perspective on money, they will strive to become college graduates and reach their dreams.
