This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a second-grade teacher in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch.
I would like to provide my students with a classroom library dedicated to famous artists. I would like this art library for several reasons. One reason is so that the children have some new, nonfiction reading material available to them. Also, I would like to embark upon a unit of study on art and artists with the children, with the culminating activity of having the children create art in the style of their favorite artist.
After the art has been made, I would like to have an "Art Show," during which time parents can come to the classroom to view the art, while enjoying snacks such as cheese and crackers and grape juice. In addition to this, I would like to include a class trip to the Brooklyn Museum so that the children may have the chance to view and critique art in the museum setting.
The classroom library on art and artists would really allow us to kick-start our unit of study. I would like to make this library as diverse as possible, so that the children may be exposed to many different artistic styles. I attempted this art unit with my students last year, but faced difficulty in garnering age-appropriate books on art and artists. I went to several public libraries and managed to find good, age-appropriate books on Picasso and Monet, so I kept the study focused on those two artists. The children enjoyed the unit; however, I know that it could have been more enriching had I been able to compile more materials.
I know that my students would enjoy learning about art and artists, and that the unit would be enriching both academically and culturally. I would like to open up the world to my students, and art is such a wonderful way to do just that.
