My Students
My students are so very special. I have a number of high-needs students, including some who have autism, speech impediments, low IQs, and some with really hard backgrounds. Despite their struggles, every day they come to school ready to work and ready to learn.
90% of my students come from families whose income is below the poverty line.
Many struggle with hunger, clothing issues, finding basic school supplies (which we often provide), taking care of siblings or in some sad cases taking care of their parents. Most are years below grade level. Every one of them comes to school looking for a safe place, which we provide for them. They come looking for love and affirmation, which we give them. And although they don't all know it, every one of them comes looking for learning, trying to figure out what they are capable of accomplishing.
My Project
My students need dry erase markers so they can practice mathematical algorithms. I am a firm believer in mathematics. As a student, I struggled immensely without understanding why numbers were doing what they were doing, and somewhere around middle school math quit making sense. I because another girl lost in a sea of numbers, feeling stupid and hopeless. I never once had a good math teacher. As an adult, I decided I wouldn't be lost like that again. I pulled myself through muddles of math and found to my great surprise, I not only loved mathematics but I was really quite good at things I thought I couldn't do.
When I became a teacher, I decided I would never let my kids fall through the cracks like I did, especially my girls.
I know they are capable of more then they think they are, and it is my goal to show them that math is fun, necessary, and sensible. I researched methods of teaching math and found some interesting things. First, I learned that 4th grade is often when kids learn to hate mathematics. Second, I learned that kids learn best by practicing. Why would you only show kids how to multiply or divide numbers on the "big board" in front of them, and not have them practice it themselves? Better yet, why not have each kid practice every problem? (This idea came from an amazing book called Teach Like A Champion.)
A few years ago I listed one of my first DonorsChoose projects, requesting a class set of small whiteboards, and they have been used nonstop during math lessons for years. I have seen a HUGE difference in students' mathematical abilities. However, we have a problem. We can't keep up with the need for markers. Will you consider donating to this project and empowering my students to achieve mathematical success?
