My Project
Two and a half years ago, I started a show choir club at my school as a new and unique opportunity for my students. The participation and excitement from the beginning led to my admin agreeing to make it a class. For the past two years, we have been a competing show choir, even winning one of our competitions last year!
I have students from all areas of the school, not just musicians; students focused on academics, students who until show choir had only done sports, and students who are shy and reserved.
Watching each student try something new, that gets them out of their shell, is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had as a teacher so far. Last year I had 36 members, this year is 42, and I have almost 70 signed up to audition for next year already.
Unfortunately, we go up against programs that spend upwards of $50,000 a year, while I have a budget of $0. I do my best with my own personal money to buy what my students need, but costumes are out of my budget as a teacher. Our feeder high school has loaned us costumes, but have no more after this year. I would love to have a set of dresses and jackets I can use every year that we personalize with each show.
I know money doesn’t make an ensemble good or bad, and we’ve been doing great without it, but when my students see other choirs and comment on how poor we are compared, it breaks my heart. They shouldn’t feel less than because of our economic situation; that should be my concern only.
To look good is to feel good, and a set of quality costumes would make a huge difference in our show choir program.
