Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My high school students will have several opportunities to put on outreach events in which they will share their scientific knowledge with younger students from surrounding elementary and middle schools. While sharing their knowledge they will also be stressing the importance of science as a beacon of hope to keep our planet healthy and safe for everyone.

To successfully inspire the younger students about the importance of science for the health of our planet, the high school students will need new tools and devices to show the amazing science that is all around us, at all times.

The items being requested will act as tools for my students to reveal scientific phenomena in real-time. One group will use the Ooze Tubes to model the interaction of oil spills in aquatic ecosystems while also using the rubber bands, the slinky, the air puck, and the airzooka as options to power alternative-renewable energy vehicles. The students can then use the tape and measurement devices to measure different objects and the distance that the vehicles travel. The soldering iron may be used by students ahead of time to create different circuits to show students how to power small LEDs as efficient energy sources. The children can also use the magnetic field demonstrator to visualize how magnetic fields change around electrical circuits. The fishing line and pink string can be used to attach moving objects while using the newton's second law demonstrator and the doppler effect demonstator as examples of energy efficiency scenarios.

The high school students will also gain the priceless experience of teaching and presenting, which is a skill that will serve them well throughout the rest of their lives. Please make science come alive for all the students in our community.
