I teach four sections of Tier 2 reading intervention classes this upcoming year. These junior high students are reading at lower elementary grade levels.
Give them diverse short stories to read in class during their independent reading time.
Most of these stories can be read in one class period, but still contain the narrative elements for literary merit and academic discussion. Some of these stories are just fun, and that's important for these readers, too. They need content suitable to their age, representation in their classroom, academic rigor, and the extra encouragement of short text.
