My Students

My students are full of energy and excitement and they learn the best when they are fully engaged in their learning experience. They remember what they have learned when they are asked to apply learned skills to a new situation or experience.

My school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students have limited experiences.

This is why we are in the process of creating a shopping center at my school. The students in our school are energetic and full of life! They get excited about the simplest of things and I can't wait to see their faces when our new shopping center is open for business. We have limited funds as a district, so we had a fundraiser to raise funds to get a shopping stand for free. Now we need to get shopping carts, play food, and cool seating to make our center complete. This center will be differentiated and age appropriate for grades k-4. All of the students in our school will use the center and get the opportunity to have fun while learning!

My Project

A shopping center will create a "real world" learning experience for the students in our school. This center will give students the opportunity to investigate math concepts through the use of manipulatives and high interest activities. They will be engaged with counting money, making change, and shopping within a budget. They will use the shopping carts and play food to shop for items of their choice while keeping in mind that they cannot over spend. After a day of shopping the students will sit on the bean bag chairs and use the dry erase markers to add up all of the items they have purchased. The grocery stand will have a cash register, two chairs, and shelves to be stocked with food. The cashier will be responsible for totaling orders and making change for their customers.

This shopping center will provide the type of learning experience that my students crave.

It is student-centered and definitely high interest. It will provide my students with opportunities to succeed with math through real life applications and create lifelong learners who seek the challenge of solving problems.
