This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The current job market requires students to develop 21st century skills that include creativity and collaboration. It is through theater that students in my classroom learn these skills. Students in my classroom have opportunities to explore who they are and who they want to be, while at the same time creating art. Theatre allows them to develop skills that are useful no matter what careers they choose.

Students at my school have diverse backgrounds.

My school is a Title one school and many of them receive free or reduced lunch. Despite their personal situations an emphasis on college and career readiness is placed on them. 100 percent of students involved in this program for three or more years move on to college and university programs after graduation.

My Project

With these materials students will be able to explore the world of technical theatre construction. Students design and construct all of their sets and technical elements for all of the shows we produce. Many organizations including the M.A.C.Y. Awards, John Raitt Awards for Youth, Orange County Cappies, and The California Educational Theatre Association have recognized my students for their technical theatre work through scholarship and awards. These materials will help us continue that tradition.

Mentors including professionals in the industry and parents come to our technical builds to work one-on-one with students so that they can safely produce their designs.
