My Project

I teach in a diverse urban district with low-income students who have little exposure to childhood experiences most would consider routine, and likely take for granted. Doing remote learning the past 18 months only deepened these gaps. While my classroom focus is academic of course, this year in particular, it became clear how vital their overall growth - social, emotional AND physical - in AND out of the classroom, truly is.

Coming back together in person, it was immediately evident how much we all needed to just be with one another.

The sheer joy of seeing friends again made teaching challenging but also underscored how social interaction would sustain us through yet another rollercoaster year. Hoping to boost engagement, I advertised a new indoor soccer program for 3rd and 4th grade girls. Since most students in our population rarely exercise or have the means to do after school recreation, I was shocked by the overwhelming response! Even more invigorating have been the squeals of joy I hear each week as I witness these girls slowly but surely build their stamina, skills and team spirit. Neither I nor my teenage daughter (and co-coach) can believe the standing ovations we get just from dribbling the ball!

As we build their love of soccer it's absolutely obvious these girls just love playing and being together. Our hope now is to take our indoor "league" outside for spring. We've cobbled together old soccer equipment of my own, and the girls used their gym sneakers. For outdoor play though, we really need cleats and outdoor nets for a safe and authentic outdoor soccer game. Please help us meet our goal of providing these nets and cleats for each girl so they can truly shoot for the stars - exercise, teamwork, friendship and fun.
