This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a low income/high-poverty part of the city where they need opportunities to succeed. Pre- K and Kindergarten children need to start their learning journey early.
I teach at a Title I school in Virginia where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
For some of my students, this is their first school experience and I want to make it a great one. They really enjoy school and learning. As little learners, they also love to read, write, and grow.
My Project
My students enjoy playing basketball. We have a set of play basketball hoops and we took them outside one day and much to my surprise the students absolutely loved them. I thought that would be great to start some team sports at school such as basketball.
Sadly, our gym does not have any basketball hoops.
This is a huge obstacle in starting our basketball teams.
Sports teach students a variety of skills- time management, team work, communication, hard work, and the list goes on. Playing a sport and being an athlete helps make you a more well rounded individual who fights through every situation. Basketball has the ability to do all this things, and I want to make that happen for my students.
Our public school has 100% free lunch and therefore our students cannot buy equipment. That being said, we need the basics. Basketball hoops, and balls. With this equipment, we will be able to teach the kids basic skills. Hopefully we will have enough student participation to hold hold intramural scrimmages. This equipment will be used in the gym or outside. Hopefully the start of our program will inspire other schools to bring this sport into their schools.
