My Students

The library's digital camera has just died and the library aides (6th, 7th and 8th graders) desperately need a new one. Why do these kids need to take photos? Here's why.

The library documents everything that happens in our school.

We take photos of Earth Day events, the Gay Pride parade, World Peace Day, the Teacher of the Year Celebration...you name it, the aides record it. The photos are more than just souvenirs. They help us communicate with parents and local businesses. They help us liaise with sponsors. Our Donors Choose thank-you photos, for example, are taken by student aides. I'm talking about around 20 kids who help me run the school library. The kids taking the photos are 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The school has over 800 students in all. We are a K-8 center, located in South Florida. That means that the kids' ages range from four to fourteen.

My Project

Whenever someone around the school needs a photo taken, they call the library desk. I send off one of the aides. The kids take photos that later appear on Donors Choose, the school website, the school Twitter site, digital photo displays in the library... you name it. (You should see how the standard of the kids' photos and videos improves over the year that they're with me in the library!)

Unfortunately, the tried and trusted camera that we've used for years has finally upped and died on us.

(Well, not exactly died. The LCD screen is covered in wavy lines. We can't see what we are shooting. Have you ever tried taking photos while you can't see what you're snapping? We're shooting blind, and the results are abysmal.) Please help the kids get a new camera! We constantly need to take photos. We really could do with a new camera as soon as possible. THANK YOU!
