Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work with a targeted group of minority students who are facing behavioral, academic, and/or socio emotional challenges. My goal is to provide support in these areas so that they not only pass their classes and ensure they are able to graduate, but to also build soft skills and character traits that will make them successful out in the real world.
Students cannot learn or be successful if they are not in school, so I find creative ways to incentivize, motivate, and encourage them to WANT to be there.
In addition to supporting my own students, I support many school wide events and incentives, one of them being attendance focused. Attendance is a big challenge for many students on our campus. My hope for this project is to create reports and track attendance and choose students who are making progress and give them opportunities to shoot the basketball to earn prizes. They will get 3 shots, and the number of shots made will correspond to the prizes they will earn. This will be done in public, in front of their peers so hopefully it will give them a boost in confidence to continue to do the right thing by attending school and completing their assignments and maybe encourage their peers to go to school as well. This will create habits that will help them graduate and become successful in their postsecondary aspirations.
