This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My wrestlers are 8 to 14-year-old students among a school population of which 80% are African American and nearly 80% are low-income. Throughout the years, our students and community have overcome many obstacles, including several attempts to shut down our LEVEL 1+ Chicago Public School.
Our wrestlers are talented, athletic, gritty, and eager to take on a new challenge!
They enjoy all of our sports programs offered at our school and many students are multi-sport athletes. Our wrestling program has grown significantly over the past few years and has almost doubled since last year! Today, we have a good problem on our hand but we will need some support!
My Project
This year, our wrestling program has expanded significantly. We have close to 40 wrestlers participating in our 3rd-8th Chicago elementary school program in partnership with Beat the Streets Chicago. This is a wonderful non-profit organization with a presence in several U.S. cities.
Due to the increase in participants at our site, we are in need of more wrestling shoes!
Without shoes, our wrestlers slide on the mats and it becomes harder to maintain balance and participate in some drills. Our wrestlers are super excited about this upcoming season. This sport has taught them determination, grit, integrity, and many other important life skills. We hope to continue to grow and support our program!
