Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a Title I school in the Bronx and my students have been through many changes this year. It seems as if every month has brought us new challenges, but my students inspire me to think positively with their continuous optimism.
My students are full of positive energy.
Despite the trials this year has put them through, they are always laughing and smiling and having a good time. Some of my favorite memories from teaching virtually last year were when my students would submit videos of themselves dancing and having fun for our assignments. They always manage to look on the bright side, and I am happy to teach them a class that allows them to get up and move, especially with how long they've spent learning behind the computer.
My Project
As a P.E. teacher, safety is my number one concern in the classroom. My students are required to wear sneakers in order to participate, but even wearing sneakers cannot keep a student safe if they trip over their own laces.
Not a day goes by that I am not asked by my students to help them tie their shoes.
With this class set of shoe tying practice sneakers, I will be able to have my students practice how to properly lace and tie their shoes. This would be a significant stepping stone for many of my students, especially those that struggle with fine motor skills.
For those students who struggle to tie their shoes, these practice sneakers will help them learn to keep their shoes tied. For those who still wear velcro shoes, my hope is that they can go home to their parents and show off their new shoe-tying skills so they can move on to shoes with laces!
