My Students
Middle school girls love to come to the school library...if you attract them with romance books. The latest craze for lovestruck teens = 'Shiver', 'Linger' and 'Forever' by Maggie Stiefvater. Please help us out! Would you buy these books for our teen readers?
These girls come to the library every day after school.
They are always into the same book series. That used to be 'The Princess Diaries'. Then came 'Twilight' and all things vampire. What do I offer them next? These ladies are pretty picky: you can't just give them anything. I called a fellow librarian + very good friend who, like me, works at a K-8 Center here in S. Florida. The girls at her school are heavily into 'Shiver', 'Linger' and 'Forever'. So MY ladies must have those books, too! Why would you help these kids? Consider our school demographics. Around 85% of our children come from low-income households. Most are first-generation Americans whose parents come from Central or South America, or the Caribbean. Mom and dad tend not to have English-language reading materials at home, or to patronize the public library. So our SCHOOL library is super important in these kids' education. But how do you get teens to come to a library? Simple! Give the customers what they want!
My Project
In the case of sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls, nothing succeeds like romance...which is why I'm itching to get 'Shiver', 'LInger' and 'Forever' onto our school library shelves. I'd also like some books from the 'Vampire Diaries' series. "Really? Are the kids STILL into vampires?", I hear you ask. You wouldn't believe it. They just can't get enough of them! Actually, 'Shiver', 'Linger' and 'Forever' follow a fairly similar story-line to 'Twilight'... except that, this time, its werewolves, not vampires. The proper name for the 'Shiver-Linger-Forever' trilogy is 'The Wolves of Mercy Falls'. You can find an article under that name in Wikipedia. The books have sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and a movie is in the works. Can't you see how my 'Twilight' fans are going to lap these books up?
These ladies don't come from the most privileged of backgrounds, but they are voracious readers, with a great future ahead of them.
We know what packs them into the library, so let's repeat the winning formula by offering these wonderful kids 'Shiver', 'Linger' and 'Forever'! THANKS!
