This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The dancers at our school are a phenomenal group of 10th-12th graders who train daily to hone their skills. As students in a career technical education program, my students declare themselves as dance majors. These learners are physically expressive, socially conscious, and creative individuals. As a community we view education and art-making as tools for empowerment, self-reflection, and social change.
Ownership and membership are important feelings that I want to foster as we enter into the 2023-2024 school year during our goal setting activity.
Last year with the support of Donors Choose, I was able to fund a goal setting activity with materials from Donors. It was such a success with my senior dance majors, that I would like to make it a tradition in my opening year lessons. This year's theme for the goal setting will be "Shine on" emphasized with metallic and iridescent materials.
I am requesting crafting materials to create crystal sun-catchers to create during our goal setting activity. In the instructional setting, I will provide reflection questions that the students will answer throughout the process, which will later be summarized and shared on the requested iridescent card stock. The reflection questions will pull lingo from this years theme while aiming to get my seniors to reflect on their inherent assets and set intentions for the upcoming school year. A sample of these reflection questions are: "What facets of you matter most?" "What are the building blocks of your identity?" "What uncomfortable circumstances have caused you to grow the most?" "What parts of you do want to shine strong this year?". The additional requested materials in this cart (hooks, pilers, chains, lights, and backdrop panels) will be used to create a display of these annual goals as a visual remind in our classroom.
