My students struggle with reading. Most of them are reading below grade level. They have not had the same opportunities to read at home that many of their counterparts in wealthier neighborhoods have had.
My students attend an inner city school and 100% of them qualify for free lunch.
Despite their often difficult home situations, they are eager to learn and love coming to school. I hope to continue to emphasize this love for learning during the time they are in my classroom.
My Project
I am requesting leveled readers, copy paper, an advanced word work book, and a flip cam. The leveled readers will allow my students access to more books at their own level. Reading at their level, and reading more, are the two biggest factors that will lead to growth in reading. The copy paper is a great need in my classroom, seeing as the school does not provide it for us. The advanced word work book is for my small group of (almost) 4th grade readers. I spend a lot of time completing remediation work for my below level students. I need more ways to keep my higher students challenged and engaged. The flip cam will allow my students to record their presentations, and reader's theater plays. We can then watch, discuss, and improve.
These materials will help some of my students be ready for reading in the 4th grade and will push others to stay interested in school.
I believe these resources will reinforce my students' love for learning and help build the confidence they need to be successful in the rest of their education careers.
