Working with students with disabilities is a struggle sometimes. My students almost all come from broken homes and are in the low socioeconomic group. Many of my students only receive food when they are at school. They have been "pushed" through the system and somehow got to high school, when they can only perform at an elementary level. Many of my students read below a fifth grade level and barely know basic math facts like adding and subtracting. They all have IEPs, which adds another dimension of hardships for them.
My students all have the capability of doing whatever they want to in life, but haven't always been told they can by previous teachers.
This is what makes my school so important. We are their last chance. We are the ones that push them to be their best selves. For some, we are their family!
Being at a charter school has its pros and cons. One of the cons is that our resources are very limited. We do not get as many supplies and reimbursement for decorations and such as other classrooms.
Being able to give my students an inspirational, clean, energetic, engaging classroom is one of my biggest goals.
The posters will give them visual reminders. The wipes will help me keep their desks and such clean. The markers and dry erase surface will let me create fun ways for them to interact and respond to discussion questions and such. The calendar will help the class stay informed on when assignments are due, when fields trips are coming up, and when tests are. All these supplies will be utilized daily in my classroom in some fashion!
