This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse first grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
We want to be ready for the 2020-2021 school year, and, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these partitions brings the safety of the students to the forefront of the preparation process.
We are excited to get back to the classroom and would really appreciate having safety measures in place.
I believe that adding the extra layer of individual student desk sneeze guards will address a growing safety concern. Students deserve to feel safe. They learn better when they feel safe. Brain research has shown when students’ basic needs for feeling protected and supported are met, then their brains are free to learn. The anxiety of returning to school can be lessened when they know their teacher is doing everything to help them be safe and stay healthy.
In a world where everyone needs to be 6 ft apart, my students and I will be in a classroom where it is impossible to conform to that restriction. We are going back to school this fall, and my students need some extra safety. These dividers will allow my students to be closer to each other and still stay safe. With them being clear, I will be able to still see my students work, and help them when needed.
