This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a kindergarten teacher in a general education class of 24 students. I want to provide my students with a wonderful learning environment full of hands-on experiences that encourage them to use their creative minds while learning the curriculum and core concepts.
My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood and a lack of funding requires that teachers spend their own money to provide many of the resources for their students.
My students are enthusiastic learners who deserve the best education and materials to support their learning.
My Project
Do you remember those black silhouettes on The Electric Company Show years ago where one person would say part of a word, and then the other silhouette would add the second half of the word while the text would appear on the screen? For me, that show really motivated me to learn to read. I am requesting several sight word games, rhyming games, and word family wheels that include picture representations of the words so that each child, regardless of their reading level or ability will feel success while learning to read. These materials will provide my students with an opportunity to manipulate words and letters and understand the relationship between the two. It is so important to make learning fun. This project is a wish list of materials that my students can actively engage in while practicing the skills needed to become readers.
Teaching reading can be very challenging, but it is also an amazing gift to be part of the journey over the course of the first year as they learn to read with independence and success.
My goal is for each of my students to be as prepared as possible for the first grade curriculum and to love the act of learning to read. That you for your support and generosity.
