This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a multicultural inner city school full of 550+ ambitious students. Most of my students love to watch and/or participate in our school performing arts. But as the school was being remodeled, the stage was completely eliminated and our performing arts program suffered.

Given the socioeconomic status of the area, most of my students haven't had the opportunity to participate in performing arts programs outside of school.

And given the cultural diversity in my school's area, most of my students aren't even aware of the performing arts programs that are available.

This is my sixth year at my current school and I'm slowly rebuilding my school's performing arts program. I started with an honor choir, and I've slowly added dance and drama. And hopefully by creating a network of support, it will enable my performing arts program to grow even more.

My Project

My projects in the past have primarily focused on my school's performing arts program. But as we enter this virtual world of learning, I'm switching up my request to fulfill a classroom need. This year music teachers must be even more creative in their teaching approach. And that's why I have chosen to incorporate a music book with every lesson.

Books with music have always been a part of my teaching strategy.

But this year I want to expose my students to a wider variety of music books. The books I have chosen for my project center on song lyrics of popular music. These songs focus on love, feelings, and positive messages. In this approach I hope to give my students a way to cope with today's stresses by using music.
