Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students thrive when given the opportunity to reset and recharge. In my special day class, where neurodivergent learners and students with learning disabilities face unique challenges, a calming environment can make all the difference. By creating a space designed for comfort and focus, we can minimize distractions, reduce anxiety, and promote positive engagement. I have already purchased a cozy chair that my students love, but I want to expand this space with additional sensory-friendly items. Stress-relief pillows that double as fidget tools, soft lighting to replace harsh overhead fluorescents, and plants to bring warmth and life into our classroom will help create a more welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, our outdoor space provides an opportunity for hands-on learning—we would love to grow tomatoes outside and use an indoor planter to show how plants thrive beyond their natural environment.To further support brain breaks, I am requesting puzzles, games, and rugs where students can relax and recharge.

These stress reducing activities will help them regulate emotions, build cognitive skills, and foster social interactions while distracting them from the sometimes overwhelming school environment.

At our Title I school, where more than 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, these small additions will have a profound impact.
