My Kindergarten class is in a low-income/high poverty area. Many of the students come in with little to no school experience and teaching them to begin reading is one of the most rewarding experiences. Often by the end of the year they are trying to read everything in their sight! The school is a neighborhood school that serves students Pre-k through 6th grade. Many students are raised by single parents and/or grandparents; however, our staff makes the school a welcoming and safe place to help students overcome adversity.
My Project
My students are so excited when they begin to understand the world of reading! It takes them to places they'd never imagined. The bookshelves will help more books be easily accessible for their young and eager minds! Additionally, my students love when learning comes to life with hands-on manipulatives. The storage unit is a great way for them to access materials to aid in problem solving.
These shelves and storage unit will allow students to use the materials independently and help establish a sense of ownership and responsibility for keeping the classroom neat.
I'm excited for another school year and hope to inspire more students to become avid readers and learners!
They will benefit tremendously from accessible books and materials.
