This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are from low income and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. They speak mostly English and Spanish and have limited experience with technology. The majority of my kiddos come from homes in crisis.

Above all, I strive to create meaningful connections with my students to help them feel safe enough and settled enough to learn.

We do the best we can with the things we have, but much of it is in disrepair. My particular room is in the annex and is very small without windows. Space is at a premium and students must carry all of their supplies from room to room all day. I don't have enough room for the chairs much less all of the backpacks all over the floors and under tables. We do what we can but it ends up eating up class time just trying to get in and get going.

My Project

Our generous patrons supplied each student with their own file box so that we could get books together and give kids in my overcrowded classroom some space to experiment and learn! But now we need shelving to put them on so they are safe from pre-teen feet and critters.

The beauty of these book shelves is that I can change the height of the shelves so that they can fit the magazine files as well as the boxes for students supplies and kits.

The thinner profile gets me an additional few precious feet to add another desk for more kids!
