This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 2nd-5th grade students are eager, young, English Language learners as well as struggling readers and our district is one of high need. My students are very enthusiastic about learning new things.
Some students attend school in a hybrid model, attending school only 2 or 4 days per week and the other days virtually.
In addition, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some students attend school virtually 5 days per week. The students have adapted to the challenges thrown at them this year and are not only surviving but thriving in this very different environment.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds. They love reading diverse books, participating in maker space activities and STEM challenges, and are very curious. There are over 1,400 students in our school!
I have a large population of English language learners. They are eager to learn and enjoy every minute of it. My students are both general and special education students. They are all amazing kids!
As a reading teacher I believe the best way to do that now while all trips and even in-person socialization is on hold, is through the pages of books.
My Project
There's no denying this has been a difficult year for staff and students alike. One of our biggest hurdles has been how to give the students access to books. They are used to being in a print rich environment. The majority of my students are not in school physically where they would be able to borrow/share books. If that isn't bad enough, the public library has remained closed! Fortunately I have been able to get books at a discount, for my students to build their personal libraries. I have done this through several programs that generously promote and support literacy in underprivileged areas. While my kids are super excited to receive and now own books, many do not have physical space in their homes for a bookshelf.
To foster a love of books and promote their proper care, I want to provide each of my students with a set of bookends that can be used on top of their dresser for easy, daily access.
Books provide my students the opportunity to dream dreams, have adventures and travel the world through the characters in their pages. This project will encourage daily reading and dreaming and cater to their learner variability by providing the students with easy access to their new books.
